A 50-year-old man arrested for raping a 9-year-old girl in Buriram province told police that the girl was “in love” with him.
Police arrested the man, known only as Prawit, in a paddy field not far from a small village in the Phlapphlachai district.
The arrest followed a complaint filed by the girl’s grandfather. He informed officials that the suspect had just recently moved to the village from Bangkok and was staying at the house of one of his sons.
Police found and arrested Prawit on Thursday. He did not resist arrest, and officials took him to Phlapplachai police station for interrogation.
During the interview, the arrested man informed police that he had sexually assaulted the 9-year-old girl. He said the incident occurred near the village in a makeshift hut on June 21st.
He went on to tell police that the girl has “consented” to having sex with him because she was “in love” with him.
He said that he did not lure oof force the young girl into having intercourse and claimed that she had fallen in love with him before the incident.
Deputy Investigation Chief, Pol Capt Attana Ardsalee, said the girl had been sent to a local hospital for examination and would be questioned about the incident with officials from child welfare present.
Over the past few months, there has been a significant increase in the number of sexual assaults on minors across Thailand.
High-profile cases usually involve trusted persons or relatives, such as the case in Mukdahan involving teachers and students, and the case in Saphan Buri, where family members and neighbors continually abused a young girl.
According to a recent UNICEF report, an average of 52 children are abused or molested every day across Thailand.
