There is an increasingly growing anger toward foreigners and outsiders across Phuket as the island begins to enforce extremely strict measures.
The Governor of Phuket has been extremely active in creating new orders on the popular tourist island to try and curb the spread of covid-19.
He put the island into lockdown last week, shutting all airspace in Phuket shortly afterward. He also implemented new rules regarding people wearing face masks today, threatening to fine people 20,000 baht if they did not comply.
Now, however, there is a growing sense of division as local people become frustrated with foreigners and outsiders who are ignoring the Governor’s instructions.
Last week, nine foreigners and five Thai ladies were arrested for hosting a rooftop party during curfew hours. Today, seven French tourists were arrested for having a Shisha party, also during curfew hours.
There was also an incident at Vachira Phuket Hospital where a Hungarian man failed to reveal he had been partying on Soi Bangla, leading to 112 medical staff being suspended and placed in quarantine.
Now it seems, locals are frustrated with the actions of these people. A popular Facebook page posted threats to foreigners and outsiders, saying “foreigners, get out of my country” and “shit tourist”.
With Patong on complete lockdown and Chalong and Kathu Districts following suit, perhaps the best resolution for everyone is to stay at home and wear a mask when venturing outside.
While tensions are high during this unprecedented situation, if everyone follows the rules set by their local districts it will certainly help to keep the peace.
In the meantime, threats like these simply do not help the situation and should be punished by the Thai Government.
