A young Ukrainian woman who was discovered in a forested area on the southern island of Koh Samui earlier this week likely committed suicide, according to local police.
Olha Frolova, a 32-year-old Ukrainian national, was found by a local resident who was in the area picking mushrooms. He noticed her leg in a nearby ditch and reported the body to police last Sunday.
Her body was partially covered with leaves and shrubs, leading police to initially investigate the possibility of foul play.
However, upon further investigation, local officials have said that the death is most likely a suicide.
Examination of the crime scene provided no evidence of a struggle, and some of the woman’s belongings were found at a nearby shopping mall shortly before she was reported missing.
The Superintendent of the Bo Phut Police, Yutthana Srisombat, said that Ms. Frolova was also suffering from depression and taking medication. He explained:
“There is no evidence of assault, stabbing, or asphyxiation on her body. Her husband and ex-husband also said that she suffered from severe depression. She had no home, income, or job, so we believe that these factors might have led to suicide.”
Despite suspicions of suicide, police will not make a final ruling until they receive a detailed autopsy report. They will also continue to investigate any clues found in Ms. Frolova’s diary and laptop, both of which were recovered at the shopping mall.
