Smiling fugitive Thaksin makes a reappearance in northeast

The fugitive former Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, has made a reappearance in provinces across the northeast of Thailand by appearing on bottles of hand sanitizer.

The publicity stunt has been arranged by the opposition party Pheu Thai which received donations from Thaksin to produce the bottles with his smiling face on the label.

The bottles also display a message that reads “My thoughts are with the Thai people. From Thaksin Shinawatra, the 23rd Prime Minister of Thailand.”

According to Somkid Chuakong, a representative of the Pheu Thai Party in Ubon Ratchathani, tens of thousands of bottles have already been given away to residents with each province receiving 15,000 bottles.

Thaksin was first elected in 2001 and then reelected before being ousted by the Thai military in 2006. He has lived in exile as a fugitive ever since.

His sister, Yingluck, was elected Prime Minister in 2011 before she was also ousted by the army and Thailand’s current Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha. She also lives in exile as a fugitive.
