A school teacher has been accused of sexually assaulting his 13-year-old niece who lived with him and his wife in the Muang district of Nakhon Phanom.
This is now the fourth case of a teacher or teachers being accused of sexual assault this month in Thailand. Among the other cases is a high profile gang rape case in Mukdahan involving five teachers, two alumni, and two young female students.
The other cases that have emerged this month were in Buriram where a temporary public school teacher admitted to molesting a young female student, and in Korat where a lecturer was accused by his wife of sexually assaulting his two children.
This latest case involved the 52-year-old uncle of the victim who was taken into custody by police on Friday following an arrest warrant being issued on Thursday.
The young girl had been staying with her uncle but suspicions were aroused when her parents video called her and saw the man in her room.
Her parents decided to take her home where she admitted she had been sexually assaulted. The parents had been working in another province, leaving their daughter to stay with the family members.
A complaint was filed with police by the parents and after the girl had undergone a medical examination they decided to press charges against her uncle.
The man denied all charges on arrest and was taken to the provincial court where police have applied to detain him for longer.
The growing number of reported sexual abuse cases on minors and by people who are supposed to be trusted in a community has led to a petition being submitted to the Education Ministry calling for harsher punishments for rape and sexual abusers.
