The huge gatherings of tourists at immigration offices across Thailand has become a major concern for Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, who is set to announce that automatic extensions for tourist visa holders will be implemented shortly.
The Prime Minister is fully aware of the lack of social distancing being practiced at immigration offices in Thailand as people rush to get extensions on visas with no way of getting home due to restrictions or lack of flights.
Deputy Minister spokesman, Natapanu Nopakun, has said that the cabinet has moved to grant automatic renewals for tourist visa holders who entered the country after March 1st.
The exact details of how the automatic extensions will be triggered and for how long these measures will last have not been confirmed as of yet.
However, the proposal was accepted by the cabinet on Tuesday, March 31stm and an official announcement will follow shortly.
People who do not hold a tourist visa must continue to visit immigration offices and extend as usual.
