An extraordinary scene was captured on camera by a member of staff at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in the Si Racha district of Chonburi province, quickly going viral on Twitter.
The video shows an enormous python wrapped around a spotted dear, squeezing the life out of the animal in preparation for a large meal.
However, before the python could consume the deer, a zoo staff member is seen hitting the giant snake with a tree branch repeatedly. The python lunges for the staff member who remains undeterred and continues to hit the snake until it releases the deer.
The python then retreats into the forest in one direction while the dazed deer struggles to its feet and flees in the opposite direction.
The video has instantly sparked a debate online about whether the staff member should have intervened or not.
Some people say that humans should not interfere with nature and the staff should have allowed the snake to eat its prey.
However, others have praised the staff member for saving the deer’s life and said that it was the right thing to do.
Veterinarian, Wisit Dhamthamkul, has said that as the spotted deer are not native to the region they are considered as treasures of the area and need to be protected.
