The United States ambassador to Thailand, Michael George DeSombre, issued a pronouncement, pledging to help Thailand stifle human trafficking.
Currently designated by the US government as a Tier 2 nation in the US Trafficking in Person Report (TIP), Thailand is seeking to be classified as a Tier 1 nation in the report.
The US Trafficking in Person Report is an annual report on the state and severity of human trafficking globally.
A Tier 1 classification under the TIP means that those countries’ governments fully comply with the TVPA minimum standards.
After the meeting with Thailand Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon, the ambassador said that the US is prepared to support Thailand and assist in combating human trafficking.
The US ambassador stated:
“All parties involved in this work are ready to fully cooperate with the US in the continued fight against human trafficking.”
Under the latest annual report, Thailand is classified as a Tier 2 country, lacking the standards for combating trafficking, but is making strides towards the cause.
Thailand has strengthened the fight against human trafficking. Efforts include providing anti-trafficking training to judges and working with non-governmental organizations to arrange trauma-informed care training to police, prosecutors, and shelter staff.
