A Thai woman is under investigation after she posted photos of a dead leopard on Facebook including images of dishes she cooked using the dead animal’s meat.
Leopards are a protected species in Thailand with very few remaining in the wild.
The woman, who has been traced to Yala province, posted a caption with the images saying “Tonight’s dinner. Did I get it by accident? Fried spicy leopard.”
It remains unclear how she got hold of the leopard and whether she hunted it, found it, or bought it from a local seller.
The National Park, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation Department (DNP) stated that there are four people who are suspected in the case. Three of them have access to the Facebook account that posted the images and two are directly involved with the case.
The post received an instant backlash online with many people disgusted that someone would show off killing and cooking a leopard.
The backlash led to the post going viral and within a few hours it was deleted and the Facebook account was shut down.
However, the DNP had already captured the post and passed the evidence on to officials and the local authorities. There is now a warrant for the arrest of all individuals involved.
