The weather has caused mayhem in the northeastern province of Korat over the past 24 hours as numerous incidents occurred due to the heavy rainstorms in the region.
On Sunday afternoon a powerful storm hit the Wang Nam Khieo district with heavy rain, thunder, and lightning.
During the storm, lightning struck a tree, setting it alight and sparking a fire in a nearby wooden home.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to extinguish the fire in approximately 15 minutes, however, the damage was already done.
Luckily, nobody was in the house as the owner was working at Thai Samakkhi market at the time. The damage caused to the property is estimated at one million baht.
On Monday morning, the storm has returned in downtown Korat with heavy rain lashing the roads causing them to become slippery.
A 20-wheeler truck skidded on the wet surface, crashing into five electricity poles and a tree and blocking the whole left side of Thao Sura Road in the process.
The driver, a 66-year-old Thai man, was on his way to pick up sand before he lost control of the truck and ran up onto the footpath.
Another incident happened at Suranaree Technology University Hospital on Monday morning as window panes on the front of the building were shattered by the storm.
Trees toppled on the hospital grounds, taking out 10 power lines in the process.
There were further reports of numerous vehicles overturning on the city’s ring road with about 20 people reported injured from the incidents.
