A police sergeant was arrested in Chachoengsao for allegedly conspiring to rob a bank with a gun according to an announcement made by the Royal Thai Police.
The serving sergeant worked as a unit commander of the Police Clearance Service Center at the Special Branch Bureau of the Royal Thai Police.
He was arrested after there were reports of a suspicious-looking man wearing black clothes, a black cloth mask, and carrying a backpack hanging around in front of the ATMs at Kasikorn bank in Chachoengsao Province.
Officers from Bangpakong Police Station who were patrolling the area questioned the man and were told that he was an undercover police officer from the Special Branch Bureau.
The man then attempted to flee from the police but was quickly caught and put in handcuffs. Police discovered a Glock 19 gun and ammunition in his jacket.
After being arrested, the man confessed to the conspiracy. Pol General Krisana Pattanacharoen, a spokesperson for the Royal Thai Police, said:
He confessed to a conspiracy to rob, saying he had 400,000 baht in debt and his wife was out of work. The sergeant will be charged with carrying firearms in a public place, while officers will further investigate the origin of the firearm and ammunition to see if there are other offenses involved.”
The suspect will also face a disciplinary punishment from an appointed committee of the Special Branch Bureau.
