The Governor of Phuket has signed an order banning people from entering and leaving the island as the number of coronavirus cases in the southern province surpasses 50.
The announcement quickly follows a curfew which was put in place across the island on March 28th, banning people from leaving their homes between 8 pm and 3 am.
Phuket Governor, Pakkapong Taweepat, issued the order to close all entry and exit points across the island of Phuket effective from midnight on March 30th until April 30th or further notice.
The order banned people and vehicles from crossing the Tha Chat Chai checkpoint in any direction. It also includes a ban on people and ships from entering or exiting the international ports in Phuket. Inter-provincial waterways are also closed.
The only exceptions are vehicles transporting food, rescue vehicles, cargo ships, and ships carrying essential items.
The move represents a near-complete lockdown of Phuket where the latest figures show a total of 53 covid-19 cases.
