Huge traffic jams were witnessed on several main roads across Thailand today as people took advantage of the four-day long weekend to go to their home provinces despite warnings not to travel.
The public holidays today and on Monday were initially in doubt as the government debated whether to postpone the holidays or not. In the end, they decided to go ahead with all public holidays in May.
As Wednesday is also a public holiday, people can take Tuesday off work and make it a 6-day holiday period.
This morning, there was bumper-to-bumper traffic along numerous highways including the Bangkok to Korat road that had cars backed-up for kilometers.
Roads from Bangkok to Pattaya and other eastern provinces were also packed with traffic as people left the city this morning.
In Phuket, thousands of people queued to leave the island after lockdown restrictions were lifted at 5 am this morning.
The Center for Covid Situation Administration warned people to remain at home when arriving at their destinations, resigned to the fact that stopping people from traveling was not working.
Instead, local authorities will issue restrictions on arrivals based on the situation in individual provinces.
