In a bid to promote domestic tourism across Thailand, the Finance Ministry is putting together a financial stimulus package for inter-provincial travelers.
The scheme will see eligible applicants receive a 3,000 baht discount at participating venues outside of their home province.
Various operators, including hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related venues that have applied to the program with the designated state agency, will be involved with the scheme.
Eligible recipients of the handout will be able to spend at the participating venues and receive an automatic discount when billed for services.
For example, if a recipient has a hotel bill of 9,000 baht, they will only pay 6,000 baht for the accommodation. The government will pay the remaining amount direct to the hotel.
A decision is still in progress regarding exactly who can apply for the stimulus package and how many people will be eligible to receive the 3,000 baht discount.
It is also unclear whether the package will be available for Thai citizens only or if it will also include foreigners living in Thailand.
The ministry is also planning to offer a cashback scheme to encourage more spending when visiting other provinces.
For example, if a domestic tourist were to visit another province and exceed the 3,000 baht handout in spending, they would then be entitled to a discount on further purchases ranging between 10 and 20 percent.
The package is designed to help Thailand’s tourism industry recover from covid-19’s impact, with domestic tourism seen as the most viable way to re-energize the tourism sector presently.
The stimulus package is likely to be rolled out next month.
