
A riot has occurred in Buriram jail this morning resulting in at least 100 prisoners escaping.
The incident happened at approximately 11.45 am this morning in the east of the district when inmates attempted to break through the front entrance of the prison.
Officers on duty fired gunshots, however, it did not deter the prisoners who proceeded to set fire to the cafeteria. Eventually, approximately 100 prisoners escaped.
Police have since arrived on the scene and are attempting to round up the escaped inmates. The Commissioner of the Department of Corrections is also on the scene with helicopter backup.
People in the region are advised to remain indoors and stay alert as the situation is ongoing.
