Wimbledon has succumbed to coronavirus as another major sporting event is canceled due to the pandemic outbreak.
Traditionally the third Grand Slam of the tennis sporting calendar, Wimbledon is a centerpiece of British sport and its cancelation will come as a blow to the thousands who treat the tournament as a fun festival.
It is the first time the tournament has not been held since the Second World War.
However, with covid-19 continuing to spread across the United Kingdom and globally, organizers have taken the decision to officially announce the cancelation early.
Ian Hewitt, All England Club Chairman, said:
“This is a decision that we have not taken lightly, and we have done so with the highest regard for public health and the wellbeing of all those who come together to make Wimbledon happen.”
The announcement follows news that the English Premier League may be voided on “moral grounds” with games unlikely to happen before the June deadline set by UEFA.
