The number of newly reported coronavirus cases in Thailand has dropped significantly for the second day running with 38 new cases announced on Tuesday.
This figure continues a declining trend, with 51 cases reported on Monday. However, the official figures only take into account people who have been tested for covid-19.
It is very possible that many more people have the virus due to insufficient testing or fears of extortionate hospital bills.
The total number of infections in Thailand now stands at 2,258. The new cases break down as follows:
- 17 people who were in close contact with previously known covid-19 patients.
- Seven people who work in crowded areas.
- Three Thai citizens who recently returned from abroad.
- Three visitors to crowded places.
- Five cases currently under investigation.
Bangkok has the highest number of infections with 1,201, followed by Phuket, which has introduced new measures, with 138, and Nonthaburi with 134.
There was also one reported death on Tuesday, bringing the total number of deaths up to 27. The fatality was a 54-year-old with no history of chronic disease but frequented bars in the Thong Lor area of Bangkok.
A total of 31 people recovered from the infection today, bringing the total number of recovered cases to 824.
